WWDTI Part 3
The organization I would like to create would be one that specializes in improved animal shelters. I think one of the reasons that people don't choose to adopt animals from shelters is because often times the animals can look sad and unfriendly when they're locked in cages. However, creating improved shelters that prioritizes the well-being of the animals will likely increase their chances of being adopted.
At these new and improved shelters, there are many services that I think would be important to incorporate in order to ensure that animals are well taken care of.
1. Improved Facilities and Housing: I think in order to make the animals at shelters seem more friendly, they should have access to large grass areas so that they may roam and socialize with other animals. If someone saw that these animals were playful and saw how active and friendly they can be, they would be more likely to adopt them. Instead of having the animals in such confined cages, that are often dark and grey, allowing them to roam in an enclosed grass area would allow potential adopters to be able to engage with the animal. Additionally, the animal would not appear as sad as they might have if they were in cages.
2. Adoption Counseling: One important service that I think would be important to offer would be counseling. Often times people are quick to adopt animals that they know nothing about. As a shelter, it is important for us to do our duty and make sure that these animals are going home to responsible pet owners. We can give them guidance on the personality of the animal, some special requirements it might have, and suggestions on keeping their pet happy and healthy.
3. Surrender Service: Another important service to have would be surrender services. While it is always sad to see someone give up their pet, sometimes they have to make this choice because they are not capable of giving the animal the life it deserves. In these instances we will take the animal being surrendered. This service is important because instead of people choosing to abandon or abuse their pets for not being how they expected, they can surrender them to our shelter with no judgement.
While these are some practice and services that are already implemented by other shelters, I would love to do my part in taking care of animals however I can. I think it is important to educate people on the quality and care that animals need and deserve and that they have compassion for them. With improved shelters, I think that more people will adopt from them and there will be less of a need for breeding different pets.
