You know that one company that seems to have an infinite marketing budget and pops up anywhere you go? You know the one... Something about dancers and communism. Yeah, I'm talking about Shen Yun. Well... I guess all their advertising worked because they finally got me. Well, more specifically, they got my dad (because he wanted to see the show).
I accompanied my dad this weekend to finally see what all this hoopla about Shen Yun was really about. He had been mentioning the show for the past few years now, saying it would be interesting to check out. So, we finally bit the bullet. I got us a pair of tickets for the performance, which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. I'll admit, it was great! The dancers were some of the most skilled I have ever seen and wore some of the most beautiful costumes. My favorite performance was titled "Yellow Blossoms". It was a folk dance with a background of lush hills and bright blossoms taking center stage. These "blossoms" were women who wore green dresses and held yellow fans which mimicked blooming flowers. It was a stunning performance.
(A terribly blurry picture I found online because we weren't allowed to take pictures inside.)
I had a great time seeing the show with my father. Although it was wonderful show, we decided it's not something we would need to see again, as our curiosity was finally satisfied. If you're not worried about it being operated by a cult and can sit through a few moments of propaganda and strange songs about religion and god, I would recommend you check it out if you ever have an opportunity to see the performance!
I grew up in the bay and I saw these ads everywhere. It was insane. One in every three billboards had their ad. This is a made up statistic but I couldn't escape them. I've never known anyone who's been to one of these shows so reading your blog post has allowed me to learn about something I've never would have experienced.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Paris halfway around the world and I saw those adds everywhere. I heard from quite a few people that it was actually quite good, I'll have to check it out sometimes.
ReplyDeleteHey Vivian! I grew up in China for half my life and I honestly didn't know much about Shen Yun as it was banned for being a cult. After coming back to the U.S., I saw the ads everywhere and always wondered what it would be like. Thank you for sharing your experience!
ReplyDeleteHi Vivian. I can totally relate to your post. In my hometown I see their billboards almost everywhere. I too have always be intrigued but I have never seen a show. I'll have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteHey Vivian. I see their advertisements all the time on YouTube! I have always wondered wether it was something that was a good watch. Good to hear a legitimate perspective rather than the ones I see in the advertisements.
